As we move from the spring into summer, I often think about the words from ‘All
things bright and beautiful’. That wonderful hymn written for children by Cecil
Frances Alexander and published in 1848.
          Each little flower that opens,
          Each little bird that sings,
          He made their glowing colours,
          He made their tiny wings.
Summer flowers are a wonderful and colourful addition to any garden or outdoor
space. However, we take so much of the natural world for granted. Flowers grow, die
away and then come up again, often without any help from us. It just happens and is
one of God’s great gifts to us.
In the Bible, flowers are sometimes used to convey deeper meanings, each having its own
significance. For example, the lily is a common flower mentioned in the Bible and is often
used to symbolise virtue, beauty, and the transient nature of life. In the book of Matthew,
Jesus himself talks about the lilies of the field, highlighting how they grow without toiling
or spinning, yet are a beautiful creation from God.
Another flower often found in the Bible is the rose, often used to symbolise love and beauty.
The rose is mentioned in the book called Song of Solomon, where it highlights the love
between two individuals. The fragrance and colourful nature of the plant is used to show the
intense emotions and relationships between people.
The blooming of summer flowers can also have a deeper meaning for us. Summer is a time
of growth, a time when things happen in the garden, a time when plants are nourished by
sun and rain. As we see the flowers bloom, we are also reminded about our own faith which
can grow and thrive in the right conditions. We too can blossom and reflect the glory of God
          in this world.
