CAMBRIDGE SOUTH STATION
OPENING SPRING 2025
You may be wondering why a new, £180m
station almost 40 miles away is being reported
in Manea Matters?
Cambridge South has been built next to the
Biomedical Campus which is obviously useful
for the people living in Manea who actually
work there but, more than that, for anyone
attending a hospital appointment at either
Papworth or Addenbrooke’s this is really
good news! Currently, you can board a train at
Manea Station and if you choose, for example The current predictions suggest
the 7:40am Cross Country Stansted train, you a footfall in excess of one million
are at Cambridge Station in 28 minutes. passengers a year.
Cambridge South will be the next station after
that so maybe 5 minutes further on? As you get off the train at Cambridge South you will
see the Royal Papworth Hospital in front of you and the Rosie Hospital, then Addenbrooke’s
just beyond that. If you don’t choose a direct train, you travel to Ely and will then need to
change for a train heading towards London (exact times not yet published but that could
currently add 15 minutes to the journey).
The new station will have retail areas along with all of the usual things you would expect to
find at a station including, as it’s Cambridge, space for parking 1,000 bicycles. The current
predictions suggest a footfall in excess of one million passengers a year so it’s certainly
expected to be a busy station.
At present, with all the roadworks in Cambridge, the drive to Addenbrooke’s takes much
longer and that’s before you struggle to find somewhere to park in the notorious Car Parks
1 or 2 - which can be very expensive if you are there for more than 4 hours.
