Thoughts from a Retired (!) Priest
I write this during a morning in August when the temperature is
already 30 degrees.
I rather suspect that as you read this the inevitable 'they' will have
told us that it is now officially Autumn, which means that Summer is
officially over. Many of us will remember it for extremely hot, humid
days and nights of fitful sleep as the temperature drops only slightly.
Having said that summer activities still carried on - barbecues were
held; holidays were taken and hopefully enjoyed and numerous fêtes
took place despite the overbearing heat. Now it’s time for harvest
thanksgiving, various harvest services and harvest suppers.
The Autumn of our life, we are told, is the season for reflection. Maybe we
all need to reflect upon our lives no matter what our season of life.
So maybe, along with me, you might like to give some thought to the things
that really count. Of course, what we do is of vital importance but what we
are goes to the very core of all our day-to-day living.
One may take only twenty years, the other the best part of a life-time.
One can be recorded in school reports and work assessments and is easily
forgotten: the other requires a life-book, which is on display forever.
