HOW TO ENCOURAGE
A RELUCTANT READER
• Let them choose their own books
• Get books about things they are interested in
• Use magazines, newspapers anything with text
• Use apps that encourage reading
• Get them to read your shopping list when out
(keep words simple)
• Build confidence through reading text you know
they understand
• Lots of praise
Studies have shown that babies read
to in the womb are more responsive to
their mother’s voice within days of birth
as one-to-one calm time and you will find
that reading is a way to calm the most
upset baby. It doesn’t matter they don’t know
the words, or that they chew the book, they
will enjoy the time and the sound of your voice it also demonstrates the relevance of reading
and will very soon enjoy joining in by turning the to children and soon those sets of squiggles
