MANEA MA TTERS
                                                              MANEA MATTERS
              HOW TO ENCOURAGE
              A RELUCTANT READER

       • Let them choose their own books
       • Get books about things they are interested in
       • Use magazines, newspapers anything with text
       • Use apps that encourage reading
       • Get them to read your shopping list when out
        (keep words simple)
       • Build confidence through reading text you know
        they understand
       • Lots of praise

Studies have shown that babies read
to in the womb are more responsive to
their mother’s voice within days of birth
as one-to-one calm time and you will find
that reading is a way to calm the most
upset baby. It doesn’t matter they don’t know
the words, or that they chew the book, they
will enjoy the time and the sound of your voice it also demonstrates the relevance of reading
and will very soon enjoy joining in by turning the to children and soon those sets of squiggles
pages or lifting the flaps. they see everywhere start to actually mean
Reading doesn’t just come from books. something.
Magazines, newspapers, backs of cereal Seeing you read is the biggest influencer on your
packets over breakfast are great places to children. If children have books around, they are
practice reading when you are pinched for time, more likely to pick them up. Second hand or
from a library, school books or borrowed books
it really doesn’t matter. Encourage your child to
pick up a book when you go in the car or on a bus
or even in the pushchair for younger children.
Reading really is one of the most important
things you can do to help your child achieve.
