HAPPY NEW YEAR
It seems a little strange writing about New Year on a foggy day in November
having just held our Remembrance Service. What an eventful year 2022 was
with the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II, three Prime Ministers, the war in
Ukraine and a World Cup starting in November! Additionally, the record high
summer temperatures and the mild autumn has proved to be very confusing for
the plants and wildlife. Hopefully, 2023 will be less eventful as we deal with the
economic challenges facing our country.
At the start of January, it’s customary to make some New Year’s resolutions. I
wonder what yours may be if any? Is it to go on a diet, cut down on the booze, spend
more time with family or take more exercise etc. Having made that resolution, how
many of us will find our willpower wavering and opt for plan B, which is ‘let’s visit
this again next year’!
However, when making a new resolution, perhaps we need to focus more on others
rather than ourselves. HM Queen Elizabeth II throughout her reign of seventy years
consistently put others before herself, a lifetime of devoted service. She is sadly
missed, but has left a lasting legacy in this country and around the world. As we
reflect on her passing, is it time for us to continue that legacy? Can we be more
generous, more cheerful, more forgiving and follow her example in our everyday
lives?
